2 more Salvadoreans face shift in death-squad case

Salvadorean military sources said Wednesday that two more officers linked to death squad killings will be transferred, one out of the country and the other into a newly created post. National Police Chief Col. Carlos Reynaldo Lopez Nuila will be named deputy defense minister and Lt. Col. Jorge Adalberto Cruz, commander of embattled Morazan Province, will be sent to the War College in Washington, the sources said.

Two top party leaders and another authoritative source say President-elect Jose Napoleon Duarte plans to split the Defense Ministry into separate departments: one agency for defense and the other for security.

Defense Minister Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova will remain in his post as chief of both divisions. The defense branch will be headed by Gen. Rafael Flores Lima, now deputy defense minister. Colonel Lopez Nuila will head the security branch.

All the sources asked not to be identified for security reasons.
