WWII Japanese interns to get Canadian apology

The Ottawa government is to apologize to Japanese-Canadians interned during World War II and perhaps offer the group some financial compensation, Multiculturalism Minister David Collenette said.

About 22,000 Japanese-Canadians, mostly Canadian citizens by birth or naturalization, were interned during the war. Their property, homes, businesses, and fishing boats were confiscated and only token restitution paid afterward.

In the United States, about $38 million was recently paid to 26,500 claimants.
