Uruguayan presidential candidate faces charges

A military judge has formally charged presidential candidate Wilson Ferreira Aldunate with aiding subversion and on three other counts, a government statement said Monday.

Uruguayan lawyers said that if a military court convicts Mr. Ferreira, he could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison. Ferreira and his son, Juan Raul, were arrested Saturday as Ferreira returned from 11 years of voluntary exile.

The three other counts were conspiracy to violate the Constitution, attacking the morality of the armed forces, and acts that could expose the country to war or reprisals from abroad.
