Trial of 4 dissidents awaits Polish timetable on amnesty
The trial of four dissidents accused of plotting against communist rule was adjourned Wednesday until the Polish parliament coudl decide the terms of an amnesty for political prisoners, Solidarity sources said.
Parliament is expected to proclaim an amnesty to mark the 40th year of Communist Party rule in Poland on Saturday.
The four dissidents, Adam Michnik, Jacek Kuron, Henryk Wujec, and Zbigniew Romaszewski, members of the KOR group of opposition intellectuals, are among some 650 political prisoners who could be eligible for release.
Western nations have set release of the four KOR defendants and the seven Solidarity leaders as a condition for lifting US-led sanctions imposed in response to martial law.
