2 Amtrak passenger trains collide in New York City

Two Amtrak passenger trains collided head-on on a trestle Monday, injuring 100 people and crushing two locomotives in the third major Amtrak crash this month. Officials said several cars were piled up and at least one was in danger of toppling from the trestle.

The Shoreliner, out of Boston, and the New England Zip, out of Washington, crashed about 10:45 a.m. at the Sixth Avenue bridge on the Hellgate line in the Astoria section of the borough of Queens, officials said. It did not appear that the collision occurred at great speed. A parallel track had been closed for maintenance.
