European Parliament plans mission to visit Sakharov
The European Parliament Friday voted to send a delegation to the Soviet Union to visit dissident scientist Andrei Sakharov. It instructed its new president, French Christian Democrat Pierre Pflimlin, to make an official request to Moscow for information on Dr. Sakharov. It hopes to bring its resolution to Sakharov's attention.
Meanwhile in East Germany, a petition of support for Sakharov was signed by 215 scientists at an international conference, sources in Rome and Geneva said. Copies were to be sent to Soviet President Konstantin Chernenko and the president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, they said. None of the signatories were from the East bloc.
