US, Uganda discuss idspute over reports of heavy killing

A US official said talks were held with Uganda Wednesday in an effort to resolve a dispute that led Uganda to bar a US military attache and suspend a $ 100,000 US military training program. Uganda acted in response to a Washington Post story quoting US officials as saying Uganda's Army had killed 100,000 to 200,000 people.

The Post on Sunday quoted Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams as calling the situation horrendous and saying US efforts to stop the killing had been unsuccessful. The killings during the past three years were part of a government-sanctioned Army crackdown against rebels and their sympathizers.
