Afghan guerrillas regain part of key valley, diplomats say

Anti-Marxist guerrillas have regained command of the upper part of a strategic Soviet-occupied valley which controls key supply routes in Afghanistan , Western diplomats said Tuesday.

The rebels appeared to be in control of the part of the Panjshir Valley, extending from Khenj to the Anjuman mountain pass in the north.

The 100-mile-long gorge was captured nearly three months ago by Soviet and Afghan government forces, forcing rebel leader Ahmad Shah Masoud and his fighters to retreat.
