Former President Giscard wins Assembly seat again

Former President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, believed to be eyeing another run for the presidency in 1988, easily won election to the National Assembly from a seat he previously held for 18 years. He received 63.24 percent of the vote in a special election Sunday in the Auvergne region of central France, the most by any candidate in the district in 20 years.

The election marked the first time in recent French history that a president returned to political life after leaving office. Mr. Giscard d'Estaing was first elected to the National Assembly at the age of 30 and was appointed finance minister under President Charles de Gaulle when he was only 36. He was 48 when he became president.
