Push to cut US-Soviet hostility based on might, Reagan says

President Reagan cautioned the Soviet Union Wednesday that his new push to lessen US-Soviet hostility is born of military strength and backed by a ''spine of steel.'' He said he wanted peace ''because peace in America is such an attractive way to live and war is a terrible interruption.''

Speaking before a univeristy audience here, he said, ''We must be strong enough and confident enough to be patient when provoked, but we must be equally clear that past a certain point our adversaries push us at their peril.'' When asked what his goal was for the meeting with Andrei Gromyko, Mr. Reagan replied it would be a chance to ''open up a dialogue about the suspicions that exist in both our countries.''
