Reagan but not Mondale to be at big New York dinner

The Mondale-Ferraro ticket will not be represented at Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Dinner, because Walter Mondale canceled his appearance and Geraldine Ferraro was rejected as a replacement. President Reagan is still scheduled to attend the traditional dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Mr. Mondale said he wanted the time to prepare for Sunday's debate with Mr. Reagan and proposed Ms. Ferraro as a replacement, but she was turned down due to a policy of having only presidential candidates on the dais in election years.

The dinner raises money for 20 hospitals, both Roman Catholic and nondenominational.
