Philippine judge spurns idea of Ver trial in 'people's court'
Justice Minister Estelito Mendoza described as ''ill-advised'' calls by opposition leaders on Saturday for a ''people's court'' to try the armed forces chief, Gen. Fabian Ver, and 25 others accused of being involved in the 1983 assassination of opposition leader Benigno Aquino. Mr. Mendoza said it would set a bad precedent.
Opposition politicians and civic, business, religious, and lawyers' groups have been calling for a special court composed of retired jurists to handle the trial, saying it would prevent a government whitewash in the case.
