Desmond Tutu appointed bishop of Johannesburg

Bishop Desmond Tutu, who won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against racism in South Africa, has been named Anglican bishop of Johannesburg, it was reported Tuesday night. He accepted the appointment in a telephone call from New York, where he is a visiting lecturer at the General Theological Seminary. There was no official announcement.

Press reports in South Africa have speculated there was a split in the Anglican Church over the nomination of Bishop Tutu for the post. He has been a prime campaigner against the country's policy of apartheid.
