aid from states to local units up 58% in five years, US says

State aid to local governments jumped 58 percent over five years, with education claiming the biggest share of these funds, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

On average, the 50 state governments sent municipalities $416 in aid per resident, according to the new report compiled from the 1982 Census of Governments. But these payments varied sharply from state to state. They ranged from a high of $2,144 per resident in Alaska to only $30 per capita in Hawaii. Education was the biggest gainer from state aid, receiving 63.2 percent of this assistance.
