Halley's comet and peace
Talk about a peace effort! Bob Cowen tells of the ``biggest coordinated international astronomical effort ever mounted'' -- professionals of many nations working to find out more about Halley's comet, last seen from our earth in 1910. . . . [``Here comes Halley's, Dec. 3]. Cowen says that as far back as the 11th century, this comet was known and is depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry in a scene where the comet flashes by! Isti mirant stella reads the legend, which means, ``They marvel at the star.''
Today, all peace-loving and peace-seeking peoples can marvel at the peace this ``dirty snowball'' is capable of bringing about!
If prominent nations can show such a working-together attitude to study a star so distant, and so rare, they can work together even better for ``Peace on earth, goodwill to men'' and make it a real Christmas project.
Surely the Christ is stirring in every national breast, and genial cooperation can be the result for years to come! Ella May Frazer Las Cruces, N.M.
I was particularly touched by the Monitor's daily religious article on Nov. 12 entitled ``Summitry.'' I find it easy to be cynical about world events. Your article was a ray of light. ``Prayer can open thought to a higher concept of leadership and government.'' Amen. Rev. Everett L. Taylor Arroyo Grande, Calif.

As a young American I feel that Sam Fink's book would be beneficial for me and for other Americans as well [``Illustrated version of document is a labor of love,'' Nov. 27]. As the article states, the Constitution is the core of government, the root of our liberties, and the most distinguishing feature of our entire nation, yet I find myself in a quandary as to what the framers of the Constitution really meant.
The article further states that teachers have always had a problem making the document appear interesting to their students. What better way for young people to learn how our Constitution really works than through Sam Fink's illustrations, historical notes, and lively commentaries. Lori Bruno-Congi Fremont, Calif
