Vancouver's Expo 86 cheered by ticket pace

If you're thinking of going to Expo 86, which opens May 2, you may want to act now. Here's why: Cheap gasoline prices; the gorgeous, undiscovered Northwest; a strong American dollar; concern over terrorism in Europe and the Mideast; and the growing interest in America's polite, quiet, and friendly northern neighbor. For whatever reason, or for all of them, people are going to flock to Vancouver's Expo 86 like hungry crows to a corn field.

It is becoming obvious that this event isn't going to be the financial flop the last two world's fairs held in the United States proved to be. Expo 86's budget is based on the projected sale of 13.75 million tickets. To date, 12 million have already been sold. The exposition closes Oct. 13.

A number of the superstar attractions have already sold out, including Liberace and Bill Cosby. Tickets for Spanish singer Julio Iglesias's performance -- some 4,000 seats -- went in just 35 minutes.

Expo 86 media relations officer Jillian McInnis assures that 40 percent of the tickets for all performances will be available to people outside the Vancouver area.

According to Ms. McInnis, accommodations in all categories, including hotels, motels, campgrounds, bed and breakfasts, and guest houses are still available in all price ranges, but she emphasizes that reservations should be made soon.

Prices for three-day passes bought before May 1 are $29.95 for adults and $14.95 for seniors and children from 6 to 12. After May 2, three-day passes are $34.95 for adults and $17.50 for seniors and children. Passes for children under 5 are free.
