Calls increase for sanctions on South Africa

Foreign ministers of the European Community failed to reach a decision here yesterday on imposing economic sanctions on South Africa. But they asked senior officials to study what options are available to the EC and report before the community's heads of state meet in The Hague on June 26. Meanwhile, South Africa's main Western trading partners -- Britain, the United States, and West Germany -- came under increasing pressure to impose sanctions. Speakers at the opening of a UN conference in Paris yesterday accused them of promoting apartheid by failing to cut off trade and investment.
