Rainy day in northern late October
October 30, 1986
Drenched leaves keep drifting to the ground like dying sparks. Many a tree -- red oak, maple, linden, mountain ash -- is giving up its claim to autumn's fire. But the spruce (blue-green pyramid) is incandescent glows in today's gloom with contained light its fixed needles velvet to the eye. Sunlight evidently partly veils this subtle shining. Gloom reveals it. Let me be a student of this tree.
