FRIDAY US Open Tennis (CBS, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. ET): Women's semifinals and men's doubles finals, live from the United States Tennis Association Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, N.Y. Louis Malle documentary (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): ``And the Pursuit of Happiness'' looks at a range of America's immigrants, new and old, through a series of vignettes by the noted filmmaker.

ABC Weekend Special (12:30-1 p.m.): The noted series premi`eres its 12th season with an animated show created with the help of the Library of Congress. It's a new version of a classic fairy tale - ``Puss in Boots'' - that has an alley cat promoting the virtues of books and reading. College football (CBS, 9 p.m. ET to conclusion): Michigan vs. Notre Dame, live from Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

SUNDAY NFL football (CBS, 1-4 p.m. ET): Check local listings for the regional game being aired in your area. US Open Tennis (CBS, 4-7 p.m. ET): The men's finals - live - concludes the tournament. Vanity Fair (A&E cable channel, 9 p.m., repeated 1 a.m.): Premi`ere of a 21-episode dramatization - in half-hour programs produced by the BBC - of Thackeray's great Victorian novel.

MONDAY Louis Rukeyser's 1988 Election Guide (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Known best as host of ``Wall Street Week,' Rukeyser here compares the economic, social, and other policies of Bush and Dukakis. Canada: True North (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): First of a four-part series about the people and land of that nation. ``The Relationship'' studies trade, defense, and other aspects of Canada's interaction with the US.

TUESDAY Roger Rabbit & the Secrets of Toontown (CBS, 8-9 p.m.): Old and new cartoon characters help you take a look at how Hollywood manages to combine animation with live action. A Refusnik Diary (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): A Soviet couple's 17-year struggle to leave their country is documented - including exile, prison, loss of jobs, and family breakup before their flight to freedom.

WEDNESDAY Sea Turtles' Last Dance (PBS, 10:30-11 p.m.): All seven species of this creature are endangered, as this documentary explains. They've been swimming the world's oceans since prehistoric times, and now some groups are trying to save them.
