HAITI'S AVRIL SAYS COUP ATTEMPT FAILS

Haitian military leader Lt. Gen. Prosper Avril said Monday that government troops foiled a coup attempt Sunday led by ``a few men blinded by ambition.'' In a nationwide television broadcast, General Avril appealed to Haitians to unite to seek democracy and called on foreign countries to give their moral support. Avril came to power in a coup last September.
