UZBEK RIOTING UNDER CONTROL, SOVIETS SAY

A week of intense ethnic rioting in the Soviet Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan was brought under control over the weekend, newspapers said. But at least 100 minority Meskhetians have been killed by Uzbeks. The Communist Party newspaper Pravda said the estimated 7,000 special troops sent in after local police lost control, have restored order.

One thousand people were injured and 650 homes destroyed according to the Army newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda. And more than 11,000 Meskhetians - Turkified Georgians deported to Central Asia by Joseph Stalin in 1944 - have been placed in refugee camps, it said.
