BAKER SEEKS MIDEAST TALKS NEXT WEEK

September 27, 1989

Secretary of State James Baker III said Monday he would try to set up a three-way meeting with the foreign ministers of Egypt and Israel next week to try to arrange negotiations between Israel and Palestinian Arabs. Baker praised both a proposal by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir for elections on the West Bank and in Gaza to choose Palestinians for the talks and another in which Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak offered to select the Palestinians.
