ANTI-ABORTION BILLS QUASHED

Anti-abortion activists suffered a setback on Oct. 10 with a Senate committee of the Florida Legislature killing four bills that would have restricted abortions, the first such vote since a US Supreme Court ruling allowing states more power to limit abortions. The rejection came at a special session called by Gov. Bob Martinez.

A US Supreme Court the same day refused to review a decision that allowed the use of an anti-racketeering law against 26 abortion opponents for incidents at a Philadelphia clinic. The justices did not hear arguments that use of the law violated the protesters' free-speech rights.
