In the Pasture
July 17, 1990
With what astonishment and delight upon this sudden April morn the new calf celebrates the fact, the miracle of being born! He shakes his head and looks around at light prevailing everywhere; he kicks at sky he cannot touch bucks off breezes in midair, and runs, as if he'll never stop, to see if land will ever end; and finally knows that it will not; for past the gate, beyond the fence it rolls, and he can see it there!
It is enough for anyone. He lies down in a patch of sun and believes the whole world is his friend!
