June 7, 1921: First Northern Ireland Parliament opened by King George V. 1956-62: Outlawed Irish Republican Army (IRA) launches unsuccessful campaign against security forces around the border.
1968: Civil rights marches begin, with violence in Londonderry.
March 24, 1972: British government takes over direct rule of Northern Ireland.
May 28, 1974: Northern Ireland power-sharing government of Protestants and Roman Catholics toppled by Loyalist strike.
1981: IRA hunger strikes end with deaths of 10 IRA prisoners.
Nov. 15, 1985: Anglo-Irish Agreement signed.
March 3, 1986: Loyalist strike or ``day of action'' against agreement.
1990: Round-table talks rumored, but did not materialize.
