TYRE, LEBANON
Palestinian guerrillas, evicted last week from bases in southern Lebanon surrendered their last heavy weapons to the Lebanese Army yesterday.Security sources said the Palestine Liberation Organization handed over heavy and medium guns at three refugee camps near the port of Tyre, 48 miles south of Beirut. The Army move was part of the Syrian-backed government's drive to extend its authority in the south after 16 years of civil war. Once it has tightened its grip on the south, the government hopes Israel will withdraw from its self-declared security zone. Israel set up this zone as a safeguard against Palestinian guerrilla activity.
