WEDNESDAY Circle of Recovery (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Bill Moyers takes a typically thoughtful - and in this case heartening - look at a new approach to alcohol and drug abuse. The focus is on a peer-support group of seven African-American male addicts who are helping each other in a new and effective way: They are looking beyond the addiction itself by confronting themselves and the harsh world they live in. World Series (CBS, 8:30-11 p.m., E.T.): Game 4.

THURSDAY Funny Women of Television (NBC, 9:30-11 p.m.): Lily Tomlin, Betty White, Tracey Ullman - talent like this has lit up the tube for decades, and this special - hosted by Carol Burnett - provides an often revealing insight into their work. It profiles TV mothers through the decades, talks behind the scenes with some of today's female comedians, and notices the way women's roles in sitcoms have changed drastically over the years. One highlight is a clip of the late Lucille Ball, at a seminar, telling the story of her career. World Series (CBS, 8:30-11 p.m., E.T.): Game 5 (if needed).
