ALASKA OIL LEAK CONTAINED

January 7, 1992

More than two dozen vessels worked through the weekend to contain a 10- to 15-mile slick of North Slope crude oil that leaked through a 10-inch rupture in the Kenia oil pipeline.

The United States Coast Guard said the pipe had been "freeze-damaged." Officials did not know how long it had been leaking before the rupture was discovered, but one source said the line may have been leaking for days.

About 42,250 gallons of an oil-water mixture was collected by early Saturday afternoon, according to a Coast Guard report.
