HOW ACOUSTIC RECORDING WORKED

January 30, 1992

A band's jazz sound flowed into a tapered recording horn (center of photo), which was connected to a cutting stylus. The vibrations moved the stylus, cutting grooves in the wax coating of a cylinder or disk that was rotated by a crank. Variations in the grooves reflected the frequency and amplitude of the sound waves. The wax version was then converted into a master from which records were made.
