Two-Lane Road
February 6, 1992
Perfume of honeysuckle
drifts
as the schoolbus
unloads. A teenage boy
in a blue T-shirt
bursts from doors
folding back.
The bus pulling away
he turns to face
a revving semi
and pumps his arm.
The driver reaches,
horn blasts rack the air.
The boy smiles
like a sly god.
We pass -
crescendo of engines,
doors unfolding,
going shut
like a curtain
on clear air
silence
and the slow perfume
of honeysuckle.
