MALAWI DISSIDENT MISSING AGAIN

July 16, 1992

Malawi dissident Chakufwa Chihana has not been seen since he was taken by police Tuesday and may have been rearrested, his lawyer said yesterday.

Mr. Chihana, freed on bail last weekend after three months in detention, went with his wife to Lilongwe police station to report as required by his bail conditions. She told reporters that police said they had orders to take Chihana to Zomba, 190 miles away.

A Zomba magistrate Monday charged Chihana on three counts of possession of seditious material. Chihana was arrested in April on his return from meetings with exiles in Zambia who oppose President H. Kamuzu Banda.
