UN MAY FORCE KHMER ROUGE TO COMPLY WITH ACCORD

The head of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), Yasushi Akashi, said Aug. 25 the UN might take coercive measures to force the Khmer Rouge to comply with the Paris peace accords, the Japanese Foreign Ministry reported.

Mr. Akashi made the remarks in a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa, a Foreign Ministry official said. Akashi did not say whether such measures would be economic or military.

Meanwhile in Bangkok, a Thai official said Japanese and Thai negotiators will meet with the Khmer Rouge again to try to break the deadlock in the peace process.

Tadashi Ikeda, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official, will arrive in Bangkok Aug. 27 for talks with Khmer Rouge President Khieu Samphan and Saroj Chavanaviraj, the Thai deputy permanent secretary for foreign affairs.

Akashi told Mr. Miyazawa that UNTAC is still confining its role to activities which call for the peaceful settlement of disputes.
