MUJAHIDEEN PROD AFGHAN REFUGEES TOWARD KABUL

Afghan refugees have begun dribbling back toward shell-shocked Kabul, many of them forced by mujahideen groups after the closure of the Pakistan border, United Nations officials said yesterday.

Thousands are still heading through the Khyber Pass toward Pakistan, despite the cease-fire agreed upon in Kabul, and the closure of the frontier to those not carrying passports and travel documents.

Pakistan closed its border shortly before the cease-fire. Pakistani Foreign Secretary Shaharyar Khan said his country wanted to avoid a repeat of the war-time refugee influx at a time when the rest of Afghanistan was peaceful.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has asked Pakistan to keep the border open.

Reports from the Afghan side of the border indicated that some of the refugees had been forced to turn back toward Kabul by mujahideen since the announcement of the cease-fire.
