This morning frantic air, nicked with a jitter of wings, has summoned me beneath its dark, where darker shapes shift against wrenching blue, hovering between night and dawn. Swept up in this motion, I stand under the awe of these wild things, their intentions a continent away. Veering across my horizon, they seem to signal some great victory, though for whom or over what I cannot imagine, unless these travelers, leaving with me some flicker of their journey to those latitudes of light, leave something of themselves cleft in this moment that I might pull down and wrap around my shoulders while I wait for their return.
