Each person in the United States would have to contribute $15,117 to pay off the accumulated federal, state, and local government debt of $3.8 trillion, according to the Tax Foundation.

The nonprofit research group reports that the ratio of government debt to gross domestic product has almost doubled from 27 percent in 1980 to 51 percent in 1992.
