Indigenous people are broadly defined as those whose ancestors were the original inhabitants of the land where they live, which was later colonized, settled, or invaded by others. They include distinct cultural groups with different languages. Estimates of how many there are worldwide range from 300 million to more than twice that number. (See map, Page 10.)
