Lighthouses belong by the sea

July 28, 1993

Regarding the article "Preserving Light for Future Generations," June 30: I have always lived on or near the water and can think of nothing more noble than a lighthouse perched upon the coast.

However, when the time comes, the seas - their reason to be - are indeed the most appropriate final resting place for lighthouses. As much as it pains me to see such beautiful monuments turn to rubble, I can see no more honorable service to their creators and keepers, those they saved and those they didn't, than to let nature take its course.

Let these treasures be. Eric Martin, Gdynia, Poland
