The Glory and Passion of Water
August 17, 1993
The visual glory of water lies in its responsiveness, catching and throwing the light in an endless game. The passion of water also lies in indiscriminate responsiveness, flowing in a whole-bodied rush, piling the gale with itself, in heaps, collapsing and rebuilding, becoming the wind's shoulder to heave things with, falling toward the sea. There is an essential meaning in this too obvious to state, as now the soft rain falls on the opening petals of the gloriosa daisies, and freights away the blown dust from the walk - here on the upstream end, where the rain does what the flood does but drop by drop.
