WORTH NOTING ON TV

Island of the Giant Bears (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Some viewers can't see enough bears on TV to suit them (all right, maybe I am speaking of my own predilections). Bears have been a staple of nature shows as far back as I can remember. Those ``short subjects'' once shown by movie theaters as a side dish to the ``feature presentation'' often starred two or three cuddly camp-trashing cubs whose antics were so entertaining you'd almost think they'd been programmed.

But can you love a creature that looks like a fugitive from the Pleistocene epoch - standing some 10 feet tall on its hind legs, weighing 1,500 pounds, capable of running 30 miles an hour, and representing the world's largest land carnivore?

Those are the vital statistics of the bears starring in this National Geographic special. They may not be cute as cubs but they are equally appealing to many nature lovers, especially as seen in the breathtaking landscape of Kodiak Island, south of the Alaskan mainland. The program spies on them as they they fish, fight, play, and care for their young. The program also looks at the competing claims of people and bears on the island.

Route '94 (CNN, 8:30-9 p.m.); A peek not only at this year's vehicles but also at those of a few years ahead is provided in this visit to the '94 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Coverage includes the ``concept'' cars being developed by manufacturers and also cars of today and the near future - the ``hot'' colors, environmental developments, safety features, security devices, and other trends. Host Bobbie Battista gives viewers a look at several new trucks and cars - such as a BMW with three seats and a solar-powered Honda that can hit 80 mph. CNN's Detroit bureau chief Ed Garsten files special reports on the car show.
