1946 -- Elected as Republican to first of two terms in US House of Representatives.

1950 -- Elected to US Senate.

1952 -- Elected vice president as running mate to Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1956 -- Reelected as vice president.

1960 -- Loses to John F. Kennedy (D) in one of narrowest US presidential elections.

1962 -- Loses California governor's race; declares, ``You won't have Nixon to kick around any more.''

1968 -- Elected president over Hubert Humphrey (D) and George Wallace (Ind.).

1971 -- Announces wage-price freeze, other major economic moves.

Feb. 1972 -- Makes historic first trip to People's Republic of China.

May 1972 -- Moscow summit with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.

June 1972 -- Watergate scandal begins with botched burglary at Democratic Party headquarters.

Nov. 1972 -- Reelected in landslide over Democrat George McGovern.

Jan. 1973 -- Paris peace accords end US military involvement in Vietnam.

Oct. 1973 -- Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigns.

July 1974 -- Supreme Court rules Nixon must surrender White House tapes, which reveal coverup.

Aug. 9, 1974 -- Resigns as president.

Sept. 1974 -- Successor Gerald R. Ford (R) issues pardon.

1978-1993 -- Writes seven books on foreign affairs.

1994 -- Visits Russia and reports findings to Clinton administration.

April 22, 1994 -- Nixon dies.
