Straight Dope: an MTV News Special Report on Drugs (MTV, 10-11 p.m.): This documentary, part of MTV's ``Enough Is Enough'' anti-violence campaign, studies drug use and its connection to violence in the United States and Europe. A poll conducted by MTV found that 16-to-29-year-olds had no doubt about the connection: They said they thought drugs were the leading cause of violence.

In documenting the link, the program looks at the violence of the drug trade and also seeks the connections between drug use and popular culture. An array of victims and their problems are addressed: an Englishwoman and her heroin habit, a Grateful Dead fan in jail because of LSD, a crack-dealing New York City teenager.

The program traces the history of recreational drug use, considers proposals both for the decriminalization of drugs and for increased regulation of them, and notes the level of drug use today.

Rock stars and politicians, such as Queen Latifah and Baltimore's Mayor Kurt Schmoke, also air their views. * WEDNESDAY

(PBS, 10:30-11 p.m.): He's a ballerina trying to keep up with the rest of the troupe. He's six different characters in a British murder mystery. He's a man at different stages in life.

Not many performers have the audacity or talent to sustain a show of the kind offered in this unusual performance special, featuring the actor-comedian in an array of mainly humorous roles. You have to be funny, and you have to be a quick-change artist and a student of human nature.

Post performs on a nearly bare stage with few props, calling on the traditions of acting and pantomime in three short pieces that make social commentary as they entertain.

He's been doing this since 1981 and has taken his one-man show on tours in 34 states, as well as Canada and Mexico.
