Planning a Trip To Ladakh? Stay Flexible And Try Summer

January 26, 1995

Situated in far northern India, Ladakh is one of the most remote regions in the world. The best time to visit is from May to September. Ladakhi winters are extremely cold and best avoided by all but the hardiest of travelers.

If you have the time, the overland trip from New Delhi takes about four days, and the latter part of the journey is surely one of the most spectacular (and harrowing) in the world. Otherwise, Indian Airlines offers seven flights a week from New Delhi to Leh, the capital of Ladakh. The flight time is about 90 minutes, and the fare is $86 one way. Flights are frequently canceled because of bad weather, however, so build some slack into your travel plans.

As part of the Indian government's plans to promote Ladakh as a tourist destination, Indian Airlines has plans to double the number of scheduled weekly flights from New Delhi to Ladakh this summer. It is also adding a second destination in Ladakh: the more remote Nubra Valley.

Accommodations in Leh range from bare basic to moderate luxury, and each season new hotels sprout. Wherever you stay, however, be prepared for frequent power and water shortages. Nearly every hotel also offers trekking and whitewater rafting - Ladakh's two most popular outdoor activities.

Because of Ladakh's high altitude, visitors are advised to avoid exerting themselves for the first 36 hours. Even after that, you may find yourself more quickly winded than at sea level.
