In the Night Garden
June 27, 1995
In waves of pink,
azaleas surge,
crashing on night's shore.
* * *
Half moon, white peony,
light night together -
heaven to earth, and back.
* * *
Night wears
filigrees of leaves, set
with her bauble, moon.
* * *
Bewigged, crabbed branches
shake bouffant blossoms
at that suitor, moon.
* * *
Arms crossed,
plum tree hides a prim smile
beneath her cerise cloche.
* * *
Creek rushes, whispering.
Wind chimes faster, faster.
Treetops toss, breathe, breathe.
