Control Students More Effectively Without the 'Rod'

Regarding the front-page article ''Southern Schools Rethink Sparing the Rod,'' June 21: There are many effective forms of discipline to control a student in a classroom. One is to remove the student from the classroom with the opportunity to return if there is a commitment to behave. This disciplinary policy has been effective in many schools.

Karima A. Haynes from Ebony magazine states reasons why experts say violence in the classroom does not work: ''Children often focus on the beating and not the reasons behind it. Spankings often generate feelings of revenge toward the person who adminsters the beating ....''

If we cannot ban violence in the home, then the school should be at least a good example of how to discipline correctly.
