Are There Limits?

December 13, 1995

''I shall rise again,''

Van Gogh told Theo:

a message that might have been

meant for any

and every other:

all earth's brothers

and sisters too.

Peter - of Tolstoy's

''War and Peace,''

looked out at the starry skies

and thought:

''All that is mine;

all that is in me.

And that is what they think

they have taken prisoner.''

Often, in silence and review,

I ask myself:

are there limits to what

the mind of man can do?

And then I think of brothers

who fashioned a flying machine,

put together

with bicycle glue -

but it flew.
