Rush Hour In Manhattan, Montana

July 22, 1996

Glutted with grain,

the high-rise

leans on Montana's

big, bright sky,

its wooden windows

nailed shut

against marauders.

Pinstriped sparrows

cluster, bluster

on its weathered steps

before heading home,

and a stray terrier

crouches and leaps

in the dirt road,

as if directing traffic

with his forepaws.

In ditches,

frogs begin rehearsal

for the early show

while distant sirens

hum on telephone wires.
