This guide includes family films, potential blockbusters, and movies that might interest young people. Only films with G ratings are tagged as all-family fare by Hollywood. Most have stronger MPAA ratings that call for extra alertness from parents.

PLOT As if out of nowhere, a 10-year-old gypsy shows up on the streets of a Mediterranean city, bringing magic and mystery into the lives of the people he meets until he vanishes as abruptly as he arrived.

MESSAGE A sense of wonder and adventure can make life satisfying even when material sustenance is hard to come by.

PLOT An eccentric 1920s millionairess adds a baby gorilla to her collection of live-in pets, then faces a crisis when his emerging wild-animal temperament makes her realize she'll have to give him up.

MESsAGE Even a good thing like affection for animals can be carried far enough to cause trouble, but good-hearted people will solve the problems in the end.

PLOT Two intertwined love affairs take place in 19th-century Russia: one between a married woman and a handsome military officer, which brings tragedy to all concerned, and another between a ditsy princess and a thoughtful but insecure aristocrat.

MESSAGE Human experience is often a tumultuous mixture of satisfaction and frustration, and solidly grounded morality is necessary for things to turn out well in the end.

PLOT A spy frozen in the '60s thaws out 30 years later and discovers that his swingin' ways and groovy outfits are out of sync in the politically correct '90s.

MESSAGE In the '60s, people expressed their freedom, but sometimes it went too far. Today, we have the best of both worlds - freedom with responsibility.

SEX Almost every scene has a reference to sex and there are many scenes with partial nudity.

VIOLENCE Many scenes with shooting and killing - much of it for laughs, but unnecessary.

PLOT A missing son prompts a mother to con two of her old boyfriends with whom she had sex 17 years earlier to search for the boy on the pretext that each is his father.

MESSAGE A parent's love brings out the best in adults, whether or not the grown-up is really the parent.

PLOT Two bubble-headed slackers try to show they've made something of their lives at their 10th high school reunion.

MESSAGE Being popular in high school doesn't always guarantee success in life; sometimes appearances can be deceiving.

SEX Mild talk about sex; no nudity.

VIOLENCE None.

DRUGS/ALCOHOL Some drinking; one character is constantly smoking cigarettes.

Speed 2: Cruise Control [PG-13]

PLOT A madman wreaks havoc on a cruise ship until various brave people manage to stop him.

THEME Even a deliberately caused crisis can eventually be halted by brave people.

VIOLENCE A large amount of mayhem and destruction, some involving action-movie suspense and some showing distinct human suffering.

Ulee's Gold [R]

+++ Directed by Victor Nunez. With Peter Fonda, Patricia Richardson, Jessica Biel, J. Kenneth Campbell, Christine Dunford, Steven Flynn, Dewey Weber, Tom Wood, Vanessa Zima. Running time: 113 minutes.

PLOT A reclusive beekeeper must come to terms with the real world when his family is threatened by thugs hunting for money that his misguided son stashed away before going to jail.

MESSAGE Family life can be very difficult, but a family is so valuable that it's worth fighting to protect in any way necessary.

SEX None, although one teenage character conspicuously flaunts her sexuality.

VIOLENCE Several violent scenes including one where sadistic men threaten the hero's family, and violent physical reactions suffered by a drug-addicted woman.

PROFANITY Several harsh four-letter words and moments of very raunchy dialogue.
