A Science Odyssey

SATURDAY - 1/10

The Victory Garden (PBS, 12:30-1 p.m.): Attention gardeners: Get ready for spring with this weekly series as it visits locales in South Africa, Australia, and England. This week, British horticulturist Adrian Bloom explores a plantation, including a house with "garden rooms."

US Figure Skating Championships (ABC, 4:30-11 p.m.): Poise. Power. Precision. An unprecedented six-plus hours of choctaws, Lutzes, axels, and more. For Americans, this is the big event before the biggest event - the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, next month. Much of the limelight will be on the intriguing showdown between world champion Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan. Kwan won the last time the two met. And despite an injury, Todd Eldredge is favored to win his fifth US title.

Casablanca (PBS, 9-10:40 p.m.): Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa is torn between love and duty - her husband (Paul Henreid) and "jilted lover" (Humphrey Bogart) - in World War II-era Casablanca.

SUNDAY - 1/11

American Football Conference final (NBC, 12 noon-4 p.m.): The Denver Broncos (14-4) take on the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-5) for the AFC title. Later, in the National Football Conference final (Fox, 4-7 p.m.), the Green Bay Packers (14-3) meet the San Francisco 49ers (14-3) for NFC honors. Next stop for the winners - the XXXII Super Bowl in San Francisco, Jan. 25.

A Science Odyssey (PBS, 8-10 p.m.): Science in the 20th century is reviewed in this five-part series that runs through Thursday. The first installment, "Matters of Life and Death," looks at medical milestones. (TV-PG)

Mary Higgins Clark's 'Moonlight Becomes You' (Family Channel, 9-11 p.m.): Fans of "Murder She Wrote" may enjoy this 1988 cable adaptation of Clark's bestselling novel. Donna Mills stars as Maggie, a fashion photographer who is reunited with her stepmother, Nuala. But soon after they make plans, Nuala is killed. When she realizes the murder may be related to a string of deaths at a retirement home, she investigates - and becomes the killer's next target. (TV-PG)

MONDAY - 1/12

The Andes (Discovery, 8-11 p.m.): Christopher Plummer narrates this compelling three-part documentary on the formidable South American mountain range. In the first episode, "The Untamed Mountains," two brave researchers study the Anaconda, a mysterious and silent predator that attacks people; while 12,000 feet above, humans chase the wild Vicuna for their fleece (which demands a higher price per pound than silver). Parts 2 and 3 focus on volcanoes and look at the human struggle by exploring the archaeological, spiritual, and commercial riches of the Andes. (TV-G)

THURSDAY - 1/15

Friends (NBC, 8-8:30 p.m.): Chandler and Joey (Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc) play a high-stakes trivia game with Monica and Rachel (Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston) to see who knows the most details about each other's lives. The grand prize: Rachel and Monica's apartment. Also, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) agrees to become a surrogate mother for her brother and his new wife. (TV-PG)

Prey (ABC, 8-9 p.m.): Another "X-Files" knockoff. In this debut episode, Debra Messing plays Dr. Sloan Parker, a bio-anthropologist who uncovers a new species of humans. She tests DNA samples of a half-dozen violent criminals and discovers that their DNA is different from other humans. The new species seem intent on eliminating homo sapiens one by one. Given the show's ridiculous plot, ABC may be heading back to the drawing board for another drama offering. (TV-PG, V)
