Why Are We Still Here?

You sit alone for a long time on the morning sand, gazing seaward. Perched at a safe distance, a sea gull is eyeing you quizzically.
"Why are you still here?" He cocks his head.
You say to him: "I am still here because the wild rugosa roses are in bloom on the headland, and because the swans are in the marsh pond across from the beach. I am still here because, behind me, the purple loosestrife is more brilliant than ever, and because, before me, the swell is increasing with the incoming tide. And, yes, because I am waiting for the sea finally to reach my feet to lap them wet along with you, old sea gull.
"I am still here because, like the ocean, my whole life surges with fresh wondering...."
