Voluptuous
October 21, 1998
With its curves and neat dip
the spoon guides what I need
to my mouth. It prides itself
on this rich service, makes itself
beautiful in roundness.
Voluptuous, Rubenesque utensil,
unique link between mineral
vegetable and animal,
holding contradictions in itself.
Of course it stirs and it ladles,
even hangs like a pendulum
from some noses. The inner life
of the spoon is varied,
but its heart belongs to that moment,
yes, that instant, of circular awe
when mouth open and ready
joins spoon and its cargo of hope.
